Some say you shouldn’t try a restaurant right after it opens because they’re still working out the glitches.
Since The Woodman is right across the street from our retail shop (No Roses Jewelry, if you guys didn’t already know that) and right around the corner from our home, husband Ty and I had to (HAD TO) at least try it. So glad we did! We’ve been back several times in just the few weeks since they opened.

I’ll hit the high points now and come back in a few months (after they’ve settled in) with an update.
- Excellent beer list. We think of ourselves as having “seasoned” beer palates, so are kind of picky about the choices on tap. After a perfefct coffee milk stout, a subtle coconut porter and a buttery saison, well… we’re sold. Someone there knows what they’re doing.
- The bartender/mixologist/cocktail folk are amazing talent. Great adult beverages… particularly from Stephanie – a very upbeat brunette with an amazing attitude, really good customer service and the best bit? She made a wickedly good Manhattan for my husband. Rye with a little citrus… sounds unusual but trust me …she knows what she’s doing.
- Service and staff: Everyone is nice, friendly and take care of customers. Nothing takes too long and they pay attention to details.
- The food is top-drawer. It’s bar food but really, really top shelf. We love the Brussells sprouts with pork belly and the scallops on grits and the (OMG!) short rib tacos. Nothing is just meh. Everything is excellent.
- Noise? Well YAH it’s pretty lively. If your ears are senstive, check it out on a Monday night around 7pm.
- Parking? Well… that’s the reason for the 4 stars. It’s valet or you can try to find a spot. Not *too* difficult on the side streets – just read the signs and be mindful of your parking meter time.
So… for the time being, we give a big thumbs up to owner Ryan and his partners for bringing this really lively, fun, open-air style gastro-pub to Sherman Oaks. Boy, did we need it!
Chow for now – I’m hungry.
